AFL team BANS hated plastic beer cups at their home games - and the replacement will keep fans' lage

The GWS Giants will no longer sell disposable draught beer plastic cups at home games this AFL season – but the change isn’t being made because fans would rather drink out of cans.

The club has forged an environmentally friendly partnership with social impact enterprise leaders, War on Single Use Plastic (WOSUP).

Ultimately, the chief aim is to reduce plastic pollution – but in good news for fans at Giants Stadium, the newly introduced lightweight aluminum cups – which are designed for repeated use – are not only a climate game-changer, they also keep beers colder for longer.

Giants Executive General Manager of Commercial Alex Stanley is thrilled with the new partnership.

‘This partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability and reducing our environmental impact … we are excited to make a positive impact together,’ he said.

On the field, GWS face a difficult assignment in their 2024 season opener against premiers Collingwood on home soil, with a healthy crowd tipped to watch the action on Saturday night.

Skipper Toby Greene is confident of an upset versus the Magpies, who beat the Giants by a point in last season’s preliminary final before winning the flag.

‘We have higher expectations than previous years … as a group we want to put our best foot forward,’ he said.

‘Our younger guys are ready to show they belong at this level.’
